Vast nature reserve encompassing savanna, mangroves, and coral reefs. Gateway to Menjangan Island.
Covering about 5% of Bali's total land area, West Bali National Park is the island's last major sanctuary of untouched nature. The park boasts an incredibly diverse range of ecosystems condensed into one area, including rainforests, monsoon (savanna) forests that shed leaves in the dry season, mangrove forests, and stunning coral reefs. The primary purpose for its establishment was the protection of the Bali Myna (Balinese Starling), an endemic and critically endangered bird species, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. While much of the park is restricted for research and conservation, visitors, accompanied by licensed guides, can enjoy trekking, Birdwatching, and diving or snorkeling around Menjangan Island, located within the park's marine zone. It offers a precious opportunity to experience the wild, untamed side of Bali, vastly different from the developed south.
History: Protecting the Bali Myna
Due to its stunning pure white plumage, the Bali Myna became highly sought after by collectors in the early 20th century, leading to rampant poaching that pushed it to the brink of extinction. The area was designated a nature reserve in 1941 and officially became a national park in 1995, allowing for comprehensive conservation efforts. Today, programs breeding the birds in captivity within the park and reintroducing them into the wild are ongoing. Visiting the park contributes to supporting these vital conservation activities. Spotting one of these beautiful white birds during a trek is considered extremely fortunate.
Diverse Ecosystems
The park's allure lies in its biodiversity. On land, it's home to deer ('kijang'), wild monkeys, leopards, and over 170 species of birds. Extensive mangrove forests fringe the coastline, serving as crucial nurseries for marine life. Offshore, the waters around Menjangan Island boast some of the world's clearest visibility, revealing a paradise of vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish. Such a wide variety of natural environments existing in close proximity is rare globally.
Activities and Rules
Activities within the park generally require accompaniment by an official guide licensed by the park office. This is to ensure visitor safety and protect the fragile natural environment. Treks vary depending on the season, traversing savanna in the dry season and lush forests in the wet season. Early morning is best for Birdwatching. Access to Menjangan Island is via boat from ports like Labuhan Lalang. Strict rules apply within the park: collecting plants or animals and littering are strictly forbidden. Respect for nature is paramount.
Highlights (Check This Out!)
The undisputed highlight is the marine environment around Menjangan Island. Even snorkeling feels like swimming in an aquarium. On land, treks offer a chance to visit the Bali Myna conservation center (confirm accessibility beforehand). Near Gilimanuk Bay on the park's eastern edge, you can sometimes observe traditional salt farming methods. Accommodation within the park is limited, but hotels and lodges are available in the nearby towns of Pemuteran and Gilimanuk.
