A classic West Bali surf spot known for its long left-hand wave. Beautiful black sand at sunset.

Located in West Bali, Medewi Beach offers a stark contrast to the developed beaches of the south, retaining its untouched nature and rustic charm as a surf destination. Its name means 'forest', reflecting its past as a densely jungled area. The beach's key features are its black sand mixed with smooth boulders and the legendary 'long left' wave, reputed to be Bali's longest ride. Reaching the break requires a significant paddle, but surfers can potentially ride for hundreds of meters. Centered around surfing, this place exudes a laid-back vibe, deeply cherished by those who prefer quiet waves and local atmosphere over glitzy resorts. At dusk, the black sand glows under the sunset, and the silhouettes of surfers on the horizon create a scene of exceptional beauty.

History: A Village Pioneered by Surfers

Medewi gained recognition as a surf spot in the 1970s when a few adventurous surfers discovered its perfect waves in what was then a remote, undeveloped area. Since then, development has been minimal, with simple guesthouses ('losmen') and food stalls ('warung') gradually appearing, fostering a unique community. Even today, you can see local fishermen heading out in small 'Jukung' boats at dawn, showcasing the coexistence of surfing and traditional fishing lifestyles.

Nature: Boulder and Black Sand Coast

Medewi's black sand originates from volcanic minerals. The smooth boulders covering the shore were carried down by rivers over millennia. This unique underwater topography created by the boulders is partly responsible for Medewi's characteristic long, peeling waves. However, walking on these boulders can be slippery, so caution is advised. Reef boots are recommended for surfing. The unique coastal geology itself is the source of the area's charm.

Highlights (Check This Out!)

Even if you don't surf, the atmosphere here is thoroughly enjoyable. Sitting on the second floor of a beachside 'warung' with a coffee, watching experts ride the waves, can easily fill a day. The area around Medewi features beautiful rice terraces and cacao plantations, perfect for exploring by rented motorbike. It offers a glimpse into the authentic side of Bali, far removed from the southern resorts. For surfers staying overnight, the best waves are often found during the calm, windless conditions ('glassy') of the early morning.
