Waterblow
Waterblow
Natural phenomenon where waves crash into a rock crevice, sending water spraying high into the air. Features walkways and viewing platforms.
Located on the eastern tip of Nusa Dua, Waterblow offers a dramatic display of the Indian Ocean's power, a natural geyser created by the force of nature. Here, waves have carved a narrow fissure into the limestone cliff formed from uplifted coral reefs. When large swells from the open ocean surge into this gap, the trapped water compresses and erupts skyward with a thunderous roar, reaching heights of several tens of meters. It looks as though the earth itself is taking a deep breath. The spectacle is most impressive during high tide or on days with high waves, when immense plumes of spray mist over the surrounding area. Viewing platforms and walkways allow for relatively safe observation, but it's crucial to respect nature's power and remain vigilant of the waves.
Nature's Mechanics and Reverence for the Sea
Waterblow is a type of 'blowhole.' Years of wave erosion carve out weak points in the rock, forming channel-like caves. When waves funnel into these caves, internal pressure builds explosively, forcing water out through an opening. Balinese culture views the sea as both a nurturing mother providing sustenance and a formidable force demanding respect. The magnificent sight of Waterblow evokes this deep-seated reverence for the ocean.
Safety Precautions
While railings are present on the viewing decks, on days with very high waves, spray can easily wash over them, potentially soaking onlookers. Ensure electronic devices like phones and cameras are waterproofed. The rock surfaces are constantly wet and extremely slippery. Never climb over railings or stray from designated paths, as sudden large waves pose a serious risk of being swept away. Even when captivated by the view, safety must always come first.
Highlights (Check This Out!)
Timing is key to witnessing the most powerful eruptions. Check the high tide schedule and wave height forecasts before your visit. On days with low tide and calm seas, there might be very little or no spray. The walkways leading to Waterblow also offer beautiful views of the Nusa Dua coastline and Mount Agung in the distance. The surrounding area, part of the upscale ITDC resort complex, is beautifully landscaped like a park, making it a pleasant spot for a leisurely stroll.
