Sanur Beach
Calm east coast resort known for sunrises and a pleasant boardwalk.
Stretching along Bali's east coast, Sanur Beach offers a tranquil contrast to the bustling scenes of Kuta and Seminyak. It's a well-established resort area where time seems to slow down. The calm, shallow sea is protected by an offshore reef, making it safe for families to enjoy the water. The beach's biggest draw is the magnificent sunrise over the horizon. Witnessing the sky gradually lighten and Mount Agung's silhouette emerge in the early morning imbues the start of the day with serenity. A paved boardwalk extends for several kilometers along the coast, perfect for mingling with locals walking their dogs or enjoying a bike ride. Sanur has a history of attracting foreign artists drawn to its beauty, resulting in a pleasant blend of sophisticated ambiance and local life.
History and Artists
Sanur was one of the first areas in Bali to develop as a tourist destination. In the 1930s, Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprรจs established his studio here, creating numerous works featuring Balinese women. His former home is now the Le Mayeur Museum, offering a glimpse into the lives of artists of that era and their deep affection for Balinese culture. Sanur's relaxed atmosphere is built upon this artistic and cultural foundation.
Culture and Daily Life
In the morning, you might see locals placing Canang Sari offerings into the sea, praying for a peaceful day. This daily ritual reflects gratitude for the ocean's bounty and reverence for nature's power, which can also be a threat. Sanur also serves as a harbor for fast boats to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, making it a hub of constant activity. Relaxing on the beach provides a chance to observe the rhythm of modern Balinese life.
Highlights (Check This Out!)
Watching the sunrise is highly recommended. Wake up early and stroll along the boardwalk to await the moment. Colorful traditional outrigger canoes, called Jukung, line the shore, making for perfect photo opportunities as they catch the morning light. During the day, relax at a beachfront cafe or explore the length of the beach by renting a bicycle. The calm waters are also ideal for trying stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) or sea kayaking.
