Padang Padang Beach

BeachBeachSurfPhoto Spot

Famous cove accessed through a rock passage. Known from movies and international surf contests.

Hidden amongst the dramatic cliffs of the Uluwatu area, Padang Padang Beach is a cove reminiscent of a secret hideout, accessed via a narrow staircase cut through a rock crevice. It gained international fame after being featured as a location in the 2010 Julia Roberts movie 'Eat Pray Love,' attracting tourists from around the globe. The scene, with its emerald green clear water and white sand beach flanked by unique rock formations, offers a very private feel. It's also a world-renowned surf spot, known for powerful waves that host international competitions like the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang. However, the area where tourists typically swim and relax is the calmer section near the shore.

Culture: The Landscape Changed by Film

Before 'Eat Pray Love' premiered, Padang Padang was primarily a local beach known mostly among surfers. Its portrayal as the setting for the protagonist's romantic encounters dramatically altered its image, turning it into a pilgrimage site for couples and movie fans. This phenomenon is an interesting case study of how media can shape the image of a destination and even change the nature of the place itself. Strolling along this beautiful beach while recalling scenes from the movie can be an enjoyable experience.

Nature: Waves That Captivate Surfers

Offshore, where the reef breaks, Padang Padang boasts one of the world's best left-hand waves (breaking towards the left). This wave is incredibly powerful and forms barrels (tubes), making it a challenge reserved for advanced surfers. International competitions are held during the dry season (around May to September) when the waves are typically at their best. While tourists swim in the calm inner reef area, simply watching the surfers tackle the waves offshore is an impressive sight, showcasing the raw power of the ocean.

Highlights (Check This Out!)

The highlight of this beach is undoubtedly its unique entrance. Descending the narrow rock staircase, barely wide enough for one person, feels like embarking on an adventure. Be mindful of the tides: at low tide, a wide sandy area is exposed, but at high tide, most of the beach disappears underwater. Check the tide schedule before visiting. Wild monkeys sometimes appear on the beach; keep an eye on your belongings, as they might snatch food or valuables.
