Hidden in a deep valley in the Petang district, north of Ubud, Nungnung Waterfall is one of Bali's most powerful, plunging waterfalls, dropping nearly 50 meters (165 ft) almost vertically. Reaching it from the parking lot requires descending over 500 steep concrete stepsโa challenging journey. However, those who make it are rewarded with a thundering roar, billowing spray, and an overwhelming sense of nature's power. The area around the pool is constantly enveloped in a fine mist, which often creates beautiful rainbows when the sun hits it. Compared to other more developed waterfalls, Nungnung retains a more untouched, wild, and mystical atmosphere. It is a sanctuary for adventurous travelers seeking to feel the full force of Bali's natural landscape.
Nature: Abundant Water Volume Fed by Highland Forests
The area where Nungnung Waterfall is located is a highland region at about 900 meters (2,950 ft) elevation, covered in lush tropical rainforest. This forest acts as a natural reservoir, ensuring the waterfall maintains a relatively high volume of water even during the dry season, allowing its powerful form to be seen year-round. The rock faces around the falls are constantly damp, fostering a dense growth of ferns and moss, creating a vibrant green world overflowing with life. Access: The 509-Step Challenge to the Waterfall
The biggest hurdle in visiting this waterfall is the long staircase of 509 steps leading from the parking lot. The descent is relatively easy, but the climb back up is extremely strenuous. There are several gazebos (balรฉ) along the way to rest, so it's important to go at your own pace. Glimpses of the waterfall appearing and disappearing through the trees on the way down build anticipation. This lengthy approach is perhaps one of the elements that makes the waterfall feel so special. Remember to bring plenty of water.
How to Enjoy and Safety Precautions
You can get close to the base of the waterfall, but be prepared to get soaked by the spray. Waterproofing for cameras and other electronics is essential. The rocks are also extremely slippery, so extreme caution is needed when walking. The pool is deep and the current is strong, making it dangerous to swim carelessly. Wading should be limited to the shallow areas near the bank. It is possible to go behind the waterfall, but do so at your own risk, as there is a possibility of falling rocks.
