Gitgit Waterfall

NatureWaterfallNorth BaliTrekking

A famous waterfall in the northern forests. A cool, refreshing valley.

Nestled in the forests of the Bedugul highlands in northern Bali, Gitgit Waterfall is a beautiful cascade dropping about 40 meters. A 15-minute walk down a small valley path, filled with the echo of rushing water, reveals the white spray through the trees. A fine mist, rich in negative ions, dances around the plunge pool, carrying the scent of damp moss. In Balinese culture, waterfalls and springs are symbols of 'purification' (Melukat) and are considered places of sacred power. A small shrine near Gitgit Waterfall always has flower offerings (Canang Sari), expressing gratitude for the clear water. The waterfall's appearance changes with the seasons; during the rainy season, a powerful roar fills the valley, while in the dry season, the rock face's texture becomes more prominent. The pathway is dotted with local souvenir shops, offering a taste of the relaxed northern Bali atmosphere. The valley floor can be cool, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea.

History and Legend

There are old legends about this waterfall. It is said that a king who once ruled this area was so captivated by the waterfall's beauty that he used it as his bathing place. There's also a local superstition that couples who visit the waterfall together will break up. This might be a warning intended to protect the sacred place from improper behavior. The waterfall is more than just a scenic spot; it is deeply connected to the lives and stories of the local people.

Nature and Belief

The waterfall is a vital part of the water system that flows from the mountains to the sea, providing a source of life for the rice fields downstream. Therefore, places of prayer are often established here to give thanks to the water gods. The power of the water crashing into the pool symbolizes nature's forces of destruction and rebirth. People believe they can cleanse their body and mind here, gaining new energy. On the way to the falls, you might see local people bathing (mandi), which for them is a daily purification ritual.

Highlights (What to Check Out!)

The Gitgit area actually has several waterfalls. Besides the main one, there's the 'Gitgit Twin Waterfall' and other falls that require more adventurous trekking. The main waterfall is impressive enough, but if you have time, ask a local guide about reaching the others. Trying some of the fragrant northern Balinese coffee from the shops along the path is also recommended. The area near the plunge pool is wet and slippery, so sturdy sandals or shoes are essential.
