Two lakes nestled in the northern highlands. A mystical panorama reflecting clouds and forests.

Overlooking from the ridge road that leads to Munduk, enveloped in the cool air of the northern Bedugul highlands, lie Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan. Known as the 'Twin Lakes,' they boast one of Bali's most mystical and serene landscapes. Believed to have once been a single giant caldera lake separated by a geological shift, their surfaces, surrounded by deep forests, quietly reflect the sky and clouds. This viewpoint is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place where Bali's nature worship and ancient history are still palpable. Especially in the early morning or at dusk, when mist shrouds the lakes, it creates a fantastical world like an ink painting, inviting visitors into a meditative state. For those wishing to escape the hustle of the south and connect with the quiet, sacred nature that is the 'soul' of Bali, this is an essential stop.

History: The Lakeside of an Ancient Balinese Kingdom

The area around Lake Tamblingan is believed to have been one of the centers of an ancient Balinese kingdom that flourished from the 10th to the 14th century. Many temple ruins still dot the lakeside and forests, and ancient inscriptions written in Sanskrit have been discovered. These ruins tell the story of a people who long revered this lake as a sacred water source and built an advanced civilization around it. The lake's water was the source for irrigation systems watering vast farmlands downstream, and the lives and faith of the people were always intertwined with this lake.

Culture and Faith: The Lake Goddess and the Sacred Forest

Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan are considered sacred places governed by the water goddess, Dewi Danu. At the lakeside temples, farmers still perform rituals to give thanks for the blessing of water and to pray for a good harvest. The forest separating the two lakes is protected as a 'sacred forest' and is believed to possess spiritual power. Trekking through this forest, one can encounter giant, centuries-old banyan trees and ancient temple ruins, offering a tangible sense of Bali's animistic (nature worship) spirit.

How to Enjoy and Activities

Beyond just enjoying the view from the lookout, it's highly recommended to go down to the lakeshore. On Lake Tamblingan, you can take a traditional wooden canoe (perahu) paddled by a local to enjoy the quiet scenery from the water (motorboats are prohibited). Trekking through the surrounding forest is also popular. If you hire an experienced local guide, they can lead you to rare birds, exotic plants, and hidden ruins within the forest. The Munduk area is also rich with coffee and clove plantations, which are interesting to visit.

Highlights (What to Check Out!)

The most famous viewpoints overlooking both lakes are clustered around the Wanagiri Hidden Hills area. However, the views from some cafes and restaurants a little further west in Munduk village offer a different, equally charming perspective. The moments when the fog clears to reveal the full expanse of the lakes are particularly dramatic. Furthermore, Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan, a temple on the shore of Lake Tamblingan, has few tourists and offers a quiet, sacred atmosphere where the lake and temple create a harmonious scene.
