Handara Gate

A photogenic split gate standing in the misty highlands. The mountain backdrop is picturesque.

Standing tall amidst the cool air of the Bedugul highlands is the massive and majestic split gate (Candi Bentar) known as the Handara Gate. Originally the entrance gate to the 'Handara Golf & Resort,' its traditional Balinese architectural beauty, perfectly harmonized with the lush green mountain backdrop, became world-famous through social media as looking like a gateway to another world. It's particularly mystical when shrouded in the characteristic highland morning mist, drawing many visitors solely for the purpose of taking a photo in front of it. While Bali has countless beautiful split gates, the Handara Gate possesses a special presence due to its grand scale and the impeccably maintained landscape surrounding it. It is an iconic scene where Balinese tradition and nature merge.

Architecture: The Meaning of the Split Gate (Candi Bentar)

The split gate, resembling a mountain split in two, is commonly found at the entrances of Balinese Hindu temples and palaces. It symbolizes the duality of the cosmos (good and evil, male and female, day and night, etc.). Passing between the two halves signifies purification, transitioning from the profane world to the sacred realm. Although the Handara Gate is an entrance to a golf resort, its design faithfully follows traditional temple architecture, showcasing Balinese craftsmanship and spirituality. Pay attention to the intricate carvings adorning the gate's surface.

Photography Tips and Etiquette

As a popular photo spot, queues often form during the day. Visiting early in the morning is recommended when it's relatively less crowded. This time also increases the chance of capturing a more mystical photo with the mist. Since you'll likely be standing in the middle of the road for the shot, be extremely careful of passing cars and motorbikes. Follow any queuing rules and be considerate by not obstructing others' photos. In recent times, a fee has been implemented specifically for taking photos.

Highlights (What to Check Out!)

The gate itself is the main highlight, but the location's charm lies in its harmony with the surrounding nature. The ridge line of the mountains soaring behind the gate and the beautiful flowers planted along the roadside further enhance its majesty. Using a telephoto lens from a distance can compress the gate and the mountain background, creating a more dynamic composition. This gate is located along the main road connecting Lake Beratan, Ulun Danu Temple, and the Munduk Twin Lakes, making it an essential stop when driving through the Bedugul highlands.
