One of East Bali's most spectacular viewpoints, offering a direct, frontal view of Mount Agung. Famous for its stunning sunrises and stargazing.
Located at the foot of Mount Lempuyang in East Bali, Lahangan Sweet is a relatively new 'insider' viewpoint offering truly spectacular scenery. It provides an unobstructed, head-on panorama of Mount Agung, allowing you to fully appreciate its majestic and perfectly symmetrical cone. At sunrise, the sun ascends from behind the volcano, casting divine light from the peak down to its base. At night, the sky fills with stars, making it a prime spot for photographing the Milky Way. The rustic, handmade viewing platforms and swings, built by the local community, add a touch of warmth to the grand natural landscape. If Lempuyang Temple's 'Gates of Heaven' frames Mount Agung, Lahangan Sweet is the panoramic stage for experiencing its full, breathtaking scale.
History: Creation by the Local Community
This viewpoint was not developed by large-scale tourism capital, but was gradually built by the local Bunutan village community, who owns the land. The project began with the desire to share the stunning views from this once-agricultural land with more people. The revenue from entrance fees and the Jeep shuttle service from the base helps fund the maintenance of the viewpoint and supports the village's development. Visiting Lahangan Sweet directly contributes to the community's sustainable tourism efforts.
Nature: Mount Agung and the Eastern Landscape
Mount Agung is the most sacred mountain in Balinese Hinduism, the center of the Balinese universe. From Lahangan Sweet, you can see not only Mount Agung but also a panoramic view of East Bali's diverse natural landscapes, from lush rice terraces and valleys to the blue waters of the eastern coastline. Especially in the early morning after the rainy season, a sea of clouds often forms in the valleys, creating an ethereal scene where only the peak of Mount Agung floats above. In the silence, broken only by the sound of the wind and birds, you will be overwhelmed by the majesty of Balinese nature.
Access and Precautions
The final road to the viewpoint is unpaved and extremely steep. Driving it yourself in a standard car or scooter is difficult and not recommended. The standard approach is to park your vehicle in the lot at the bottom and either take the village-operated 4WD Jeep (for a fee) or, if you are physically fit, hike up on foot. To see the sunrise, you will need to depart in the very early morning. It gets quite cold at this altitude, especially before dawn, so warm clothing is essential. The ground can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is required.
What to See (Check This Out!)
The tree deck (a viewing platform built on a tree) set against the backdrop of Mount Agung is the most popular photo spot, and you may need to queue for your turn. If you look to the east, you can capture the ridge of Mount Lempuyang (home to the famous temple) and the rising sun in the same shot. Stargazing is also highly recommended, but a flashlight is essential. The famous Lempuyang 'Gates of Heaven' and the 'Tirta Gangga' water palace are nearby, making it easy to combine them for a full day of exploring East Bali's highlights.
