Blue Lagoon Beach

BeachBeachSnorkelingPort Town

A small cove flanking the port town. Famous for its clear, shallow waters, making it a delightful spot for snorkeling.

Tucked away on the north side of the East Bali port town of Padang Bai, Blue Lagoon Beach is a hidden gem. True to its name, on sunny days the water is calm and shines a brilliant, vivid blue. While the beach itself is small and the sand somewhat coarse, its real treasure lies beneath the surface. Just a few meters from the shore, an astonishingly rich and beautiful coral reef thrives, making it one of Bali's most popular and easily accessible snorkeling spots. Swarms of colorful tropical fish greet you like a natural aquarium. Visitors are often amazed to find such a tranquil and stunning underwater world right next to the hustle and bustle of the main port.

History: The Port Town's Backyard

Padang Bai has long prospered as a vital port connecting Bali with Lombok and Nusa Penida. For the locals, Blue Lagoon was like a 'backyard'โ€”a place to take a break from work or for children to play. As its incredible underwater world became known to divers and snorkelers, it began attracting many tourists. Despite its popularity, it still retains a relaxed, local atmosphere.

A Rich Marine Ecosystem

The coral reef at Blue Lagoon is exceptionally healthy and diverse, largely because its shallow depths allow ample sunlight to penetrate. You can easily spot popular tropical fish like clownfish, butterflyfish, and Moorish idols. Lucky snorkelers might even encounter sea turtles or small reef sharks. The area along the rocks on the right side of the beach is particularly dense with fish. While the current is relatively mild, it can get a bit choppy at high tide or on windy days, so exercise caution.

How to Enjoy and What to Note

Snorkel sets are available for rent at the warungs (small cafes) on the beach or along the stairs leading down, making it easy to visit empty-handed. However, to protect this beautiful reef, it is crucial that you never stand on or kick the coral. Corals are extremely delicate living organisms. Always be aware of your body and fin position in the water, maintaining a safe distance. Choosing a reef-safe sunscreen (one without harmful chemicals) also helps protect this fragile environment.

What to See (Check This Out!)

Next to Blue Lagoon, over a small hill (about a 10-minute walk), is another beautiful, larger beach called Bias Tugel (White Sand Beach). It's better suited for swimming and sunbathing than snorkeling. For a great view, visit the Pura Silayukti temple on the hill overlooking Padang Bai harbor, which offers a stunning panorama of the port and the sea.
