Tukad Cepung Waterfall
A fantastical waterfall in a rock corridor, famous for its 'pillars of light' in the morning.
Hidden deep in a ravine in Bangli Regency, Tukad Cepung Waterfall is a mystical site that has recently gained fame through social media. What makes this waterfall special is that the water doesn't fall into an open space. Instead, it flows into a cave-like rock corridor, and when sunlight streams through the opening in the ceiling, it creates a fantastical scene, like a shower of light from the heavens. The approach itself, which involves descending jungle stairs and walking through a shallow river from the parking lot, builds a sense of adventure. The sound of water echoing inside the cave, the streams of light on the rock face, and the rising mist create a uniquely beautiful scene that captivates all who visit.
Nature: A Symphony of Light and Water
The waterfall's highlight, the 'pillars of light,' are best seen when the sun is high in the sky, between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Sunlight beams directly through the gap in the cave's ceiling, reflecting off the mist and creating a divine, spotlight-like effect. This phenomenon depends on weather conditions and the season, so you are very lucky if you get to see it. This waterfall is a perfect stage created by natural forcesโwater carving the rock and light illuminating the space.
Access and Safety Precautions
To reach the waterfall, you must walk through a river, so it is essential to wear clothes that can get wet and non-slip water shoes or sports sandals. The water is usually ankle-deep, but the level can rise during the rainy season or after rain. The rocks inside the cave are also extremely slippery with moss. Watch your step and proceed slowly. Take full precautions for electronic devices like cameras, such as using a waterproof bag.
Culture and Beliefs
For the Balinese, caves and springs are sacred places where gods and spirits dwell. Tukad Cepung is also seen not just as a scenic spot, but as a spiritual place with purifying powers. Near the waterfall, you may see small shrines or 'canang' (offerings) placed by locals. Respect the sacred atmosphere of this place: do not shout, and do not leave any trash behind. Quietly enjoy your dialogue with nature.
Highlights (What to Check Out!)
Visiting during the hours when the 'pillars of light' appear is best, but the cave's mystical atmosphere can be enjoyed at any time. Don't just view it from the front; try changing your angle to capture the different expressions of light filtering through the rock crevices. The waterfall pool is shallow and you can play in the water, but be aware it is very cold. It is popularly combined with visits to nearby Tibumana Waterfall and Goa Gajah on a day trip from Ubud.
