Tibumana Waterfall

NatureWaterfallPhotographyNature

An elegant waterfall with a wide curtain of water falling straight down. The path lined with palm trees is also famous.

Located east of Ubud in Bangli Regency, Tibumana Waterfall is captivating for its elegant and perfectly formed appearance, as if it were perfectly designed. Tucked away in a lush jungle basin, a wide curtain of water flows straight down a dark rock face into a calm, emerald-green pool below. Its popularity is also due to its relatively easy access: a 10-minute walk from the parking lot, passing through a palm-lined farm path and down stairs surrounded by tropical plants. During the rainy season, the flow often increases, creating twin falls, showing a different face depending on the time of year. Its quiet and mystical atmosphere has earned it the name 'hidden paradise,' loved by those seeking a peaceful moment with nature.

Nature and Legend

It is said there is a small cave behind this waterfall, and it has long been believed to be a place of sacred power. According to legend, this cave leads all the way to the nearby Pura Goa Raja temple and is a secret path (Jalan Ratu) for the gods. For this reason, while swimming in the pool is permitted, it is believed one should avoid getting too close to the cave. The beauty of the waterfall exists alongside this reverence for the unseen world.

Access and the Path

The path to the waterfall has been well-maintained in recent years, making it relatively easy to walk even for children and the elderly. Along the way, you can enjoy the walk itself, passing over bamboo bridges and seeing beautiful tropical flowers. The view of the palm trees and rice fields, especially between the parking lot and the top of the stairs, is very photogenic. The rocky area around the waterfall pool is slippery from the mist, so please watch your step.

How to Enjoy and Etiquette

The pool is relatively large and shallow at the front, making it ideal for wading or swimming. However, the force of the water directly under the falls is strong, and there's a non-zero chance of small stones falling from above, so you should not get too close. While this is a popular spot, please enjoy the natural sounds quietly, without shouting or playing loud music. To protect the natural environment, be sure to take all your trash with you.

Highlights (What to Check Out!)

Viewing the waterfall from the front is most common, but it's also beautiful to take photos from the side, capturing the light as it enters. Early morning, before the sun is directly overhead, is recommended for the softest light, which photographs the waterfall and surrounding greenery beautifully. If you visit during the rainy season (around Decemberโ€“February), you have a higher chance of seeing the more powerful twin falls. It has a different character from the nearby Tukad Cepung Waterfall, so if you have time, it's interesting to visit both and compare them.
