A grand panorama of scattered, steep islets. The treehouse and cliff trail are also popular.

Located on the easternmost tip of Nusa Penida, the 'Thousand Islands Viewpoint' lives up to its name, offering a spectacular panorama of countless small islands and unique rock formations scattered across the blue sea below. This spot, also known as Raja Lima (Five Kings), provides a view of the dramatic cliffs of the adjacent Diamond and Atuh Beaches, and even the Lombok Strait in the distance. A trail leads down the ridge from the lookout to the famous 'Rumah Pohon' (Treehouse), which offers an even more exceptional view. Standing before this natural artwork, sculpted by wind and waves over millennia, one cannot help but feel the smallness of human existence. The sunrise is especially dramatic, as the colors of the sky and sea change moment by moment.

Nature: A Landscape Carved by Erosion

This breathtaking landscape was born from the intense erosion of the limestone island by waves, rain, and wind. The small islands and pointed rocks floating in the sea were originally part of the mainland; the softer parts were worn away, leaving only these harder sections behind. The cross-section of the cliffs reveals beautiful striped patterns of geological layers, telling the story of this land being at the bottom of the sea in ancient times. It is a grand geopark where you can feel the history of the earth's activity.

Culture: The Treehouse and Viewpoints

The Treehouse (Rumah Pohon), a symbol of this area, was originally a simple hut built by locals as a lookout. Its rustic appearance and stunning location became famous worldwide via social media, and it is now a popular spot that can even be booked for an overnight stay (though difficult to reserve). The treehouse and viewpoints are designed to maximize the natural scenery while allowing people to enjoy it safely. These man-made structures can be seen as an expression of reverence for nature and a desire to share its beauty with others.

Enjoyment and Precautions

From the main viewpoint, you must descend a steep, narrow staircase to reach the treehouse. Some parts of the path are unstable, so sturdy shoes are essential. Taking photos at the treehouse is very popular, and there is often a queue. Be courteous to others and pay close attention to your safety. Many parts of the cliff edge have no fences, and it can be windy, so do not lean out too far. The sun is strong, so bringing a hat and water is a must.

Highlights (What to Check!)

Sunrise is the most beautiful time, but the spectacular view can be enjoyed just as well during the day. In addition to the main viewpoint, the second and third lookouts further down the path offer different, equally stunning angles. Very close to the treehouse is a small Hindu shrine, a reminder that the local people's prayers are woven into this beautiful landscape. A visit here is best combined with Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach for a full-day plan to soak in the charms of East Penida.
