A scenic ridge hike just minutes from central Ubud. The hills and rice fields glow beautifully in the morning and evening light.

The Campuhan Ridge Walk offers a tranquil escape into rural scenery, feeling worlds away from the hustle and bustle of central Ubud. Its name comes from 'Campuhan,' meaning 'where two rivers meet,' a place long revered as sacred and powerful. This gently sloping 2-kilometer paved path follows the top of a ridge, flanked by deep valleys on both sides. It offers idyllic views of swaying coconut trees and fields of 'Alang-alang' (cogon grass). For locals, it's a daily path for walks and jogs; for visitors, it's a healing trail offering a glimpse of Bali's timeless landscape. The best times to walk are early morning when the sun is low, or late afternoon as the sky turns crimson at dusk, creating a magical play of light and shadow. No special gear is needed, making it an accessible way for anyone to feel the breath of Ubud's nature.

The Sacred Power of Campuhan

In Balinese Hindu belief, a 'Campuhan' (confluence of two rivers) is a sacred place where different energies merge, creating powerful purifying forces. Near the start of the walk lies Pura Gunung Lebah, one of Ubud's oldest temples, said to have been founded in the 8th century by the Indian sage Rsi Markandeya. Legend says he sensed the spiritual power at this confluence, cultivated medicinal herbs, and healed the local people. Walking this path is more than just a hike; it's a spiritual experience, connecting you with this sacred energy.

Best Seasons and Times to Walk

While enjoyable year-round, the walk is most beautiful just after the rainy season (around April-June) when the greenery is exceptionally vibrant. The best times for a walk are early morning (6:00โ€“8:00 AM) when the light is soft, or late afternoon (4:00โ€“6:00 PM) as a cool breeze picks up. Midday sun is extremely strong with very little shade, so heatstroke prevention is essential. Be sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, plenty of water, and sunscreen. The path can become slippery during the rainy season, so watch your step.

How to Walk

The round trip is about 3โ€“4 km. Remember to stay hydrated, protect yourself from the sun, and walk at a comfortable pace.

Highlights (What to Check Out!)

The entrance can be a bit tricky to find. From Ubud Palace, head west and take the small path that goes down to the right, just before the sign for the 'Ibah' hotel. You'll first pass Pura Gunung Lebah, cross a bridge, and then the ridge path begins. There are several small cafes along the way where you can rest and enjoy the view. A popular route is to walk to the Karsa Kafe near the end, have a juice, and then head back. You can return the same way you came or take a leisurely stroll through the paths of the surrounding villages.
