Atuh Beach
Atuh Beach
An arch-shaped white-sand beach with a rock arch and turquoise cove. A signature viewpoint on the east coast.
Located on the east coast of Nusa Penida, Atuh Beach is a beautiful cove known for its dramatic scenery. Looking down from the clifftop, you get a panoramic view of the arching white-sand beach, the massive, iconic rock arch standing offshore, and the incredibly clear turquoise sea. This landscape, alongside the adjacent Diamond Beach, is an iconic viewpoint of Nusa Penida's east coast that captivates many travelers. To get down to the beach, you need a fair amount of stamina and caution for the 20-minute descent down a steep staircase, which often lacks handrails. A few simple 'warungs' (eateries) on the beach rent sunbeds, offering a place to relax and listen to the powerful sound of the waves. The sunrise, in particular, is spectacular, rising through the rock arch and creating a magical scene.
Nature: The Sea-Carved Rock Arch
The iconic arch rock of Atuh Beach is a 'natural bridge,' formed when a limestone headland was eroded by waves over many years, leaving only the harder rock behind. This unique landform speaks to the raw power of the open ocean's waves. The beach sand is white and fine, but in some areas, it is mixed with many coral fragments, so care is needed when walking. The color of the sea changes moment by moment, from deep blue to vibrant emerald green, depending on the angle of the sun and the tides.
Access and Safety
While some parts of the staircase down to Atuh Beach have recently been reinforced with concrete, many sections remain steep and slippery. It becomes even more dangerous after rain, so hiking shoes or non-slip sports sandals are essential. The climb back up is far more exhausting than the descent, so it is wise to bring plenty of water and avoid the hottest part of the day. Swimming is not recommended due to the very high waves. Even when playing at the water's edge, always keep an eye on the waves coming from the open sea.
Culture and Beliefs
There is a temple on the clifftop that protects this area. For the local people, this beautiful coastline is not just a scenic spot but a sacred place where deities reside. Ceremonies are sometimes held here on holy days. When visiting, remember to respect nature, and enjoy its beauty quietly without shouting or littering. It is common to visit Atuh Beach along with the adjacent Diamond Beach, which are located on opposite sides of the same hill.
Highlights (What to Check!)
The most famous view is the composition from the clifftop viewpoint, looking down on the rock arch and the entire beach. The moment the sun rises through the arch in the early morning is a spectacular sight worth waking up for. Once on the beach, the area to the left (facing the sea) is relatively calmer and suitable for relaxing. Enjoying the otherworldly view with a cold coconut from a warung is a true luxury.
