Angel's Billabong
Angel's Billabong
A natural 'infinity pool' carved by the sea. Forms a beautiful mirror surface at low tide.
Located right next to Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong is a mystical infinity pool created by nature, truly living up to its name, 'the angel's watering hole.' Among the rugged black volcanic reefs, a natural pool shimmering in emerald green appears. The pool's floor is smooth sand, and the water is so astonishingly clear it feels as if you are walking on glass. The edge of the pool connects directly to the open ocean, and the view from there creates the illusion of being one with the sea. This miraculous sight only appears during low tide. At high tide or on days with rough seas, it transforms into an extremely dangerous place as giant waves crash over the rocks and into the pool. It is one of Nusa Penida's iconic spots, where one can feel both the beauty and the severity of nature simultaneously.
Nature: A Spectacle Created by the Tides
'Billabong' is an Australian Aboriginal word meaning a crescent-shaped lake or waterhole left behind after a river floods. Angel's Billabong is precisely that: a fleeting paradise that appears and disappears with the tides. Only when the tide is low and the waves are calm does the reef act as a natural breakwater, revealing this quiet, beautiful pool. When visiting this spot, it is absolutely essential to check the tide charts beforehand and aim for low tide.
The Most Important Warning: Safety First
This location attracts many tourists because of its beauty, but it is also one of the most dangerous places in Bali. There have been multiple fatal accidents in the past where tourists were swept away by sudden, large waves. Even if it looks calm at low tide, rogue swells from the open ocean are unpredictable. Never underestimate the 'sets,' or periodic large waves. Standing or sitting on the pool's edge, or turning your back to the sea for photos, is extremely dangerous. Entering the pool is also not recommended. Enjoy the scenery only from a safe distance on the reef.
Highlights (What to Check!)
From a safe location, take your time to appreciate the pool's clarity and the gradient of its colors. When the sun shines, the shadows of the underwater rocks shimmer, creating a fantastical sight. The area beyond the pool is near 'Manta Point,' and if you are lucky, you might spot manta rays swimming gracefully from the clifftop. It's standard to visit along with Broken Beach, but it is wise to plan your visit for the times when each spot is at its best and safest: Angel's Billabong at low tide, and Broken Beach at sunset.
